Choosing
a filler Fillers are available for a variety of uses, both indoors and
outdoors, no matter the size of the job. When selecting a filler, you need to
consider setting time, ease of use and quality of finish. The following guide
will help you choose. Interior filler Suitable for repairing
small cracks or holes in plaster, wood or masonry, an interior filler gives a
smooth surface which can be painted and is strong enough to take screws and nails.
Available in powder or ready mixed forms, these fine surface fillers produce a
faster setting, smoother finish, ideal for minor cracks and blemishes.
Exterior filler Tough, weather-resistant fillers will resist shrinking
and cracking. Designed for repairing holes or cracks in external concrete, cement,
brickwork or woodwork, they can be applied to doors, window frames, walls, steps
and patios. Lightweight filler Lightweight, ready mix filler
can be used to fill larger holes and cracks in internal walls and ceilings. Highly
adhesive and easy to spread, it can be applied up to 50mm (2 inches) deep in a
single layer, without risk of sagging or cracking when set. All purpose
filler More expensive but more versatile than single use types, all
purpose filler can be used on cracks and holes in plaster, wood, masonry and other
materials, drying to produce a tough, slightly flexible surface. Some are designed
for external as well as internal use. Comes in powder or paste form.
Metal filler Fast setting polyester-based filler in two parts, which
bond when combined. Available in rigid or flexible forms, these fillers are ideal
for repairing cracks in metal, such as gutters and downpipes. Wood filler
Available in ready mixed or two part forms, which set when combined,
wood filler is flexible enough to cope with the natural expansion and contraction
of wood without cracking. Some can be colour matched to different woods.
Frame sealant Frame sealant is a flexible, non setting, rubbery
paste ideal for gaps between masonry and woodwork where movement occurs eg between
walls and door frames. Supplied in gun cartridges, it is ready for painting after
four hours. Foam filler For deep cavities in most building
materials, foam filler expands to around 60 times its original volume and moulds
to fill the shape of the gap. Expensive but ideal for hard-to-fill areas such
as round pipes through walls, and for sound and draft insulation. When dry it
can be cut, sanded and painted. home
